Investigators are looking for a driver in what Nanaimo RCMP describes as a fiery single-vehicle crash Tuesday night.

Police say an older-model Volvo was seen driving southbound on Nicol Street, near Needham Street, at a high speed around 9:15 p.m.

When it approached Needham Street, the driver tried to make a left-hand turn but was unable to and drove into a fence, then fell down a cement retaining wall. It came to a rest on its side before catching fire.

Witnesses to the crash say they did not see any other occupants in the vehicle, and the driver, who is described as a heavy-set man, was seen fleeing barefoot along Haliburton Street.

The crash caused damage to the nearby business and the vehicle has been towed from the scene.

Investigators are currently attempting to contact the registered owner of the vehicle. If anyone has information on the incident, they are asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, and quote file # 2022-29605.
