Victoria Police respond to an animal call Monday afternoon on Hillside Avenue. A dog died in the incident and a man was arrested.

A man is in custody after police responded to what is being described as a disturbing report of an animal incident that has led to the death of a dog Monday.

Victoria Police were called to the 1300-block of Hillside Avenue around 4 p.m.

When officers arrived, they located a suspect who had barricaded himself in an apartment suite.

Heavily armed members of the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team and crisis negotiators were also called in.

Residents of neighbouring suites were evacuated out of caution.

Efforts to get the man to come out peacefully were unsuccessful, however, the suspect unexpectedly came out of the building shortly before 7 p.m.

“The man then left the suite unannounced and an ARWEN was deployed. This is a less-lethal projectile,” Bowen Osoko of VicPd said Monday night.

“The man was taken into custody after that without incident, transported to the hospital to be checked out. But, yeah, certainly arrested.”

Police would not confirm if the man owned the dog, and the investigation is still in its early stages.

Police say the investigation is being looked at as a criminal matter, but they will look into all aspects to determine what happened.
