Authorities say a scuba diver died from his injuries following an undisclosed accident underwater off the coast of Ladysmith Friday.

At around 1:00 p.m., a boat called 911 reporting a diver in distress following the accident, according to Ladysmith Fire Chief Chris Geiger.

RCMP, firefighters and paramedics responded to the Ladysmith Government Dock, with an air ambulance called in to transport the diver.

“We got a call about 1 o’clock, what came in as a scuba diving accident. They had had the patient back aboard the vessel and were steaming to Ladysmith for assistance, so we brought ambulance. Ambulance landed a helicopter down here and were attempting to make rescue. When the vessel got here, the paramedics called it. So unfortunately the patient was deceased when they arrived at the dock,” said Ladysmith Fire Chief Chris Geiger.

A victim services unit was on the scene to assist the diver’s friends.
