Prior Lake and Mackenzie Creek Trail in Thetis Lake Regional Park are seen cordoned off with police tape on Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023, following a drowning the day prior. The lake and trail are now reopened to the public, according to the Capital Regional District.

The West Shore RCMP say the body of the 49-year-old woman who drowned in Prior Lake has been recovered, and the lake and surrounding trail are now reopened to the public.

In a news release Monday afternoon, RCMP say the death does not appear to be suspicious, and officers are working with the BC Coroners Service.

It was around 1:45 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, when Mounties were called to the lake in Thetis Lake Regional Park for a report of a woman underwater. Paramedics and the View Royal Fire Department were also called to the scene.

Prior Lake and the surrounding Mackenzie Creek Trail were subsequently closed and cordoned off with police tape Saturday “to allow crews the space and privacy they need to work,” said RCMP. The Capital Regional District (CRD) said the closures were “in consultation with the Westshore RCMP.”

The CRD posts closure updates online, and at 4 p.m. Monday said the lake and trail had been reopened. Both are accessed via Highland Road in View Royal, near Victoria.

“Prior Lake and McKenzie Creek Trail have been reopened to the public … Thank you for your cooperation,” reads the update.

“We thank the public for their patience and send our condolences to the family and friends of the woman,” added Cpl. Nancy Saggar, media relations officer with West Shore RCMP, in the release.
