The B.C. Coroners Service has confirmed a death from an accident near Nanoose Bay Friday.

The Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department says they responded around 3:30 p.m. to reports of a collision between a fuel truck and vehicle at Highway 19 about three kilometres south of the intersection with Northwest Bay Road.

They say no fuel was spilled and that the highway was reduced to one lane alternating traffic and completely closed at points for the RCMP investigation.

“[The death] was very unfortunate,” said Nanoose Bay fire chief Doug Penny. “But the RCMP needed the time to do the right investigation because once the evidence is gone, it’s gone.”

Nanoose Bay fire added that one woman was also transported from the scene to hospital.

No further details on the accident have been released.

Traffic congestion was reported to have stretched to Nanaimo following the incident.
