A cyclist is in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a serious collision near the intersection of Borden and McKenzie in Saanich.

Police responded just after 1:30 p.m. on Saturday after a report that a truck had hit a cyclist after making a right-hand-turn into a parking lot.

Initial reports say the male driver fled the scene, but he was later found in the parking lot. Investigators are in the process of trying to determine if it was a hit and run.

“I wouldn’t say it’s absolutely a hit and run, but it’s one of the avenues of the investigation we are heading down,” said Acting. Sgt. Brent Wray with Saanich police. “Some witnesses said he possibly had left and when we arrived he wasn’t on scene but he arrived shortly thereafter.”

Police say the driver is cooperating.

The female cyclist was rushed to Victoria General Hospital with what are described as grave injuries.
