RCMP say a cyclist is in critical condition following an early-morning collision with a cube van on the Nanaimo Parkway.
According to police, the crash occurred at around 6 a.m. when the cyclist collided with the 5-tonne cube van. Paramedics took the cyclist to a local hospital and he was then airlifted to Victoria General Hospital.
Police said the cyclist is a 55-year-old man from Nanaimo. He is in critical condition and his family has been notified.
The driver of the cube van was not injured.
After the collision, the Nanaimo Parkway southbound lanes were closed between Northfield Road and Jingle Pot as RCMP officers investigated. The lanes reopened around 10 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing and the cube van will undergo a mechanical inspection. RCMP said investigators have determined that the cyclist was not wearing a helmet, had no lights on his bike and was wearing dark non-reflective clothing.
