A luxury fishing lodge barge that ran aground on a beach near Queen Charlotte on Haida Gwaii has prompted crews to respond.

West Coast Marine Response posted to social media about the incident, saying local contractors are staging equipment nearby.

A skimming vessel has also been sent from Prince Rupert as a precaution.

Skimming vessels are designed to remove oil floating on a water and are equipped with boom systems that are deployed for recovery operations.

The barge is owned by the company HaiCo, and was originally tied up to an anchor in Alliford Bay before it became loose and traveled 10 kilometres before ending up on the beach Saturday.

An inspection crew detected a strong presence of gas vapours indicating a fuel leak Saturday night.
