A mechanical failure at the Ganges Wastewater Treatment Plant has resulted in a spill north of the facility near Ganges Creek, according to the CRD.

The regional district says the failure happened to a part of the above-ground piping system and believes it is due to the cold weather.

A statement posted on the CRD’s website says the spill was mostly contained to the wastewater treatment plant site, but some sewage entered the storm water system leading from the facility to Ganges Creek and out to Ganges Harbour.

Crews have completed clean-up and placed warning signs around the affected area.

Residents are advised to avoid the areas where the spill occurred, as well as avoid entering the waters along the affected shorelines.

The regional district will be working with Island Health to conduct environmental samples to determine when the affected area no longer poses a health risk, but warning signs will remain in place until then.
