The Cowichan Aquatic Centre is preparing to reopen its doors to the public after being closed for the duration of the pandemic.

The facility says that it will welcome back patrons starting on October 13.

The aquatic centre states it is planning on a phased reopening in an effort to safely resume full services and guests will be required to follow new health protocols at the facility.

For customers looking to register for pool programs, the Cowichan Aquatic Centre is asking patrons to come “swim-ready,” bringing as few possessions as possible. Change rooms will only be accessible to patrons after their program. The centre adds that a clean bin will be provided for guests, in order to store their personal items during programs.

No pool equipment, including goggles and kickboards, will be available for public use.

According to a press release, patrons can now register for a select offering of programs and services that will soon be available at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre. More information on programs as well as updated safety protocols can be found online.

The Aquatic Centre has remained closed since March 16 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Municipality of North Cowichan says that despite the closure, regular maintenance, along with the scheduled expansion and renovation to this facility, was able to proceed.

The municipality adds that renovations will be largely completed upon re-opening, and the facility will boast newly upgraded features like larger competitive swim and fitness areas and more.

“I want to commend staff for finding a way for renovations to proceed during the unfortunate closure due to COVID-19. This meant less impact on patrons in the long run. I am so glad that our facility can re-open to the community safely and in an improved state,” said Mayor Al Siebring.

Siebring adds that North Cowichan is “ecstatic” to be reopening the doors of the aquatic centre for recreation purposes.

“People won’t be able to just drop in and take a class or use the fitness room like they used to, but these changes and safety precautions will be paramount for us to keep our staff and community members safe,” he said.
