Island Health has declared a COVID-19 outbreak at Tofino General Hospital (TGH), where four patients have tested positive.

“The outbreak at TGH is limited to the inpatient unit,” read the statement from Island Health.

“The emergency department and the rest of the hospital remains open. There has been no impact to other areas of the hospital at this time.”

Island Health said it immediately implemented safety precautions, including enhanced cleaning and contract tracing.

“Island Health has implemented comprehensive strategies to prevent and respond to COVID-19 in long-term care, acute care, assisted living and licensed facilities,” the health authority said.

The hospital remains open — should patients require emergency care, they can visit the ER.

The statement comes after the province reported 292 COVID-19 cases and five deaths in the Island Health region over the Thanksgiving long weekend.
