B.C. reports 292 new COVID-19 cases, 5 deaths in Island Health over Thanksgiving long weekend

British Columbia health officials on Tuesday reported 2,096 new COVID-19 cases and 28 deaths over the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Five of those deaths over the weekend occurred in the Island Health region, which also recorded 292 new cases during the same time period.

Daily case breakdown:
Oct. 8-9: 603 new cases
Oct. 9-10: 634 new cases
Oct. 10-11: 468 new cases
Oct. 11-12: 385 new cases

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. now stands at 194,581 while the death toll climbs to 2,029.

In a statement released to the media, the B.C. government says are currently 5,183 active cases in the province and 357 people in hospital — 153 of whom are in intensive care. They also say there are currently 622 active cases in the Island Health region.

In addition to the 292 new cases that were identified in Island Health over the long weekend, 229 cases were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 814 cases were in Fraser Health, 404 cases were in Interior Health, 351 cases were recorded in Northern Health.

A total of 186,955 people in B.C. have recovered from the novel coronavirus while 7,978,015 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide. Health officials say that works out to first doses for 89.3 per cent of all eligible adults in B.C. and 88.5 per cent of all eligible people 12 and older.

Furthermore, new data released by health officials shows that between Oct. 4 and Oct. 10, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 68.1 per cent of all cases identified in the province and that people not fully vaccinated accounted for 73.7 per cent of all hospitalizations between Sept. 27 and Oct. 10.

Island Health

With the announcement of five more COVID-related deaths in Island Health over the past 96 hours, the region has now recorded seven such deaths since the beginning of the month.

According to the latest update from Island Health, there are 550 active cases — 58 in North Island, 235 in Central Island and 257 in South Island — currently on Vancouver Island.

Forty-two people in the region are currently in hospital with COVID-19 — 28 of whom are in critical care.

Since the last update on Oct. 8, there were 5,256 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island, according to the BCCDC’s dashboard. Of those doses, 71 were AstraZeneca, 3,412 were Moderna and 1,773 doses were Pfizer.

A total of 1,324,309 vaccine doses — 639,116 are second doses and 3,226 are listed as “other” doses — have been administered on Vancouver Island. This includes 34,186 doses of AstraZeneca, 365,970 doses of Moderna and 924,153 doses of Pfizer.

Since the onset of the pandemic, there have been 9,556 cases reported, 77 deaths, 457 total hospitalizations, and 8,817 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.

Editor’s note: The BCCDC lists the active case count for Vancouver Island at 622, which is 72 more active cases than what Island Health has reported. There are often discrepancies between the figures due to “differences in reporting” timeframes between the two agencies.
