COVID-19 in schools: Island Health reports three new exposures

CHEK News
Chemainus Elementary Community School is among three schools recently added to Island Health's COVID-19 exposure list.

Island Health has identified three new COVID-19 exposures in schools on central Vancouver Island.

The exposures all took place at schools in Comox, Chemainus and Nanaimo between Feb. 22-23, according to Island Health’s website. They occurred at:

  • Aspen Park Elementary School
    2250 Bolt Ave., Comox
    Feb. 22
  • Chemainus Elementary Community School
    3172 Garner St., Chemainus
    Feb. 22 and 23
  • Cedar Elementary School
    2215 Gould Rd., Nanaimo
    Feb. 22 and 23

The COVID-19 exposures come a day after Island Health reported a trio of possible exposures in Nanaimo schools on Feb. 22:  Dover Bay Secondary, Uplands Park Elementary and McGirr Elementary.

An exposure is recorded by the local health authority every time a person with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 infection attends school during their infectious period.

Island Health cautions parents that just because they’ve received an exposure notification, it doesn’t necessarily mean their child was exposed to the virus.

Close contacts of any known cases will be contacted directly by health officials and given further guidance.

There are currently 17 schools on the known exposure list. Schools are removed from the list 14 days after the exposure date if there are no new cases.
