To spot on cougar on Vancouver Island is unusual but what folks saw outside a downtown Courtenay business is almost unheard of.

This small cougar kitten was spotted on Cliffe Avenue at about 6:30 yesterday evening.

Conservation officers captured the young cat and say it is less than four months old.

On the advice of the provincial wildlife veterinarian, the cougar will be transferred to the Greater Vancouver Zoo.

There it will be given a full health assessment and a permanent home will be found.

Cougars are not admitted to orphan animal rearing programs due to potential human safety issues.
