The BC Coroners Service has confirmed that a human foot was found inside a shoe on a Victoria-area beach earlier this summer.

The limb was discovered on July 23, but at the time the BC Coroners Service said it could only confirm that an investigation was underway.

On Wednesday, the service told CHEK News it could confirm the shoe contained a human foot.

An investigation is still underway, and there’s no timeline yet on when it will be complete.

Ryan Panton, spokesperson for the BC Coroners Service, tells CHEK News it’s the first time an investigation of this kind has taken place since 2021.

A series of similar finds took place about a decade ago, when more than a dozen dismembered feet were discovered along B.C. shorelines between 2008 and 2017.

In 2019, the BC Coroners Service said 13 feet had been identified through DNA, all of them belonging to people who were reported missing under non-suspicious circumstances, like boat sinkings.
