The BC Coroner Service confirms it’s investigating after a person reported finding a human foot inside a shoe on Gonzales Beach in Victoria’s Fairfield neighbourhood Sunday.

Coroner spokeperson Ryan Panton said in an email that the service was unable to provide any further information while the investigation is underway, but says it is the first such discovery in the province since 2021.

A series of similar grisly finds along the B.C. coast from 2008 to 2017, with more than a dozen dismembered feet washing up on shore, made international headlines.

In 2019, the service said it had managed to identify 13 feet through DNA. All of the people whose remains were identified at that time were determined to have gone missing through accidents such as sunken boats, or other non-suspicious circumstances.
