Victoria's TC 10K race has been cancelled.

The 2020 Times Colonist 10K has been cancelled by organizers over concerns about the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The 31st annual 10-kilometre race, which sees around 10,000 walkers and runners, was scheduled for April 26, 2020.

“At this point today, the TC 10K looks like it’s not going to happen,” Mark Defrias from the TC 10K executive committee said.

“We’ve had a lot of runners out there. We have a lot of staff that have been working so hard to put this event together.”

The announcement comes after the province recommended organizers cancel any events for 250 or more people. The TC 10K board held a meeting this afternoon about the circumstances around COVID-19.

“We got to follow that mandate,” Defrias said.

The province is also advising against all non-essential travel outside of Canada, including the United States.

The TC 10K board said they have a no-refund policy but they are looking at deferring registrations until next year.

The province announced seven new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday, bringing the total in B.C. to 53.
