A 27-year-old Courtenay man is facing several charges following a traffic stop that resulted in officers drawing their weapons, say police.

At around 10:20 a.m. on April 8, Comox Valley RCMP officers received reports of a man holding what appeared to be a gun inside a local business.

RCMP say the man was spotted leaving the business and entering a vehicle, which officers eventually located and stopped on Grieve Avenue in Courtenay.

Due to the fact that the man was reportedly armed, multiple RCMP officers exited their own vehicles with their guns drawn.

The occupants of the vehicle were detained, however, released after it was determined that the man with the firearm was “no longer” inside the vehicle, say RCMP.

A subsequent investigation resulted in officers arresting an unidentified 27-year-old Comox Valley man, who is expected to face an unspecified number of charges, according to the RCMP.

“Frontline members believed there was potentially a firearm inside the vehicle and or in the possession of one of the occupants. This type of vehicle stop is one of the most dangerous and members used an abundance of caution to ensure the safety of everyone inside the vehicle, themselves, and the surrounding neighbourhood,” Const. Monika Terragni, media relations officer, with the Comox Valley RCMP, told CHEK News.
