Aidan Webber’s family says they have heard from people from “all corners of the world” following news of his death this past weekend.

The 18-year-old from Nanaimo died in a workplace accident Sunday, and the family issued a statement Wednesday morning saying “we have found comfort in the outpouring of love and support from friends and colleagues from the world of competitive BMX racing, his work on the water, and from communities throughout the province, especially Comox and Nanaimo.”

WorkSafeBC said preliminary details indicated the incident happened about 10 miles off the coast of Port Hardy and involved a fish pen.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating.

Webber won Cycling Canada’s BMX junior men’s national championship last July in Quebec and in 2017 he won the Steve Smith Memorial Award for achievement in extreme sport.

The statement, written by Jim and Nicole Webber, said “Aidan was an exceptional human being, who lived life to the fullest with a sense of adventure
and passion,” adding he died doing a job he loved and was excited to pursue.

They said Aidan lived life at “full throttle” and was beloved by those who knew him, and he was also a “treasured” coach and mentor to young riders.

The family has asked for privacy and for people to not speculate or interfere with the investigation into Webber’s death.

A celebration of Aidan’s life will be held on March 31 at the Beban Social Centre in Nanaimo, with doors opening at 1 p.m. and the service starting an hour later.

Nanaimo BMX posted a tribute for Webber Monday on social media, saying he was an “amazing son, brother, rider and friend to many. He has been a constant figure racing around Nanaimo’s track and tracks all around the world. His friends come from far and wide. Aidan will be missed by all.”

The statement says if you would like more information about the service or to help the organizers, you can contact [email protected]
