The operator of the Sunshine Early Childhood Centre in Colwood confirmed children were evacuated as a precaution Tuesday morning as police responded to an incident across from the daycare.
On Tuesday morning, RCMP responded to an incident at a townhouse across from the daycare on Sooke Road.
Daycare operator Kim Coy said she had just finished driving the kids to the centre when she noticed a large police presence across the street. She decided to evacuate the 40 children and move them off-site to nearby Juan de Fuca Park. The daycare does a daily field trip away from the centre so Coy said they just went early on Tuesday.
“My heart is going, it’s not a fun event. and it’s not something we like to see,” Coy said.
Coy said police have now left the area but they were armed with their rifles when they responded.
