The City of Victoria has revealed modified the application process for business licences by shifting to an E-apply online service.

In a press release issued by the city, a statement reads that the new tool will make “renewing or applying for a business licence quicker and more convenient for new and current business owners.”

The new process allows businesses to apply or renew licences without having to visit City Hall – something that not only helps with efficiency but also limits contact amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The modified application process enables business owners to apply for the licence online and submit all necessary documents. The E-apply service also allows for payment of a business licence invoice and printing of the business licence as well.

“City staff were already working towards streamlining the way we do business at the City of Victoria and this was prioritized during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic,” said Mayor Lisa Helps. “It’s also great timing and we’re proud to be able to launch this new online option during Small Business Month.”

Small Business Month in B.C. is celebrated every October and recognizes the “contributions entrepreneurs and small business owners make towards the economy and local communities,” the CIty of Victoria writes in a statement.

“Making it easier to do business in British Columbia is a must. Offering digital, streamlined services helps small business owners by making it quicker and simpler to accomplish necessary tasks,” said Muriel Protzer, Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses. “CFIB congratulates the City for its new E-Apply portal, which will make it easier to apply for a business licence and access records online.”

The City of Victoria notes that there are currently some exceptions to the online application process as some categories of business licences require in-depth documentation and a more detailed review. These licences include taxis, restaurants and short-term rentals. Online applications for these categories are not available online at this time.
