Firefighters in Port Alberni will be getting a wage hike.

The City of Port Alberni and the Port Alberni Professional Fire Fighters Association Local 1667 recently ratified a new five-year collective agreement.

The agreement is retroactive to 2020 and will expire at the end of December 2024.

“The dedicated firefighters in the City of Port Alberni provide critical support to the entire community, with a high level of professionalism,” Mayor Sharie Minions said in a news release. “This agreement is essential to the continued well-being and stability of our community and we are pleased it has been ratified.”

Under the agreement, firefighters and other employees represented by PAPFFA Local 1667 will see a general salary increase of 2.5 per cent in 2020 and 2021. Salary increases in future years will be tied to an average of comparator communities across the province.

The agreement also includes improvements to benefits and other working conditions and clarifies language around working conditions.

“Our agreement with the City of Port Alberni provides assurance and stability to our working conditions for the years to come,” stated Travis Cross, President, PAPFFA. “Our members are proud and committed to continue providing a service of excellence in order to keep our community safe.”

The PAPFFA represents approximately 10 per cent of City of Port Alberni staff.
