Go Team Go is taking part in the annual Power to Summit fundraiser in honour of a close friend this year.

Robert and Erin Horne, Sean Dhillon and Maya Mallory — members of Go Team Go — were all strangers before last year.

That was until one virtual charity event brought them together.

“We heard about this virtual fundraiser called Power to Be Power to Summit. What it is is you basically get together in teams of four and you virtually climb a mountain,” said Dhillon.

After working together last year the team affectionately known as Go Team Go is back once again, this time as friends.

“We’ve taken more pleasure in each other’s company and just kind of being more involved,” said Horne.

“Last year we hadn’t met and we were kind of just thrown together like just a bunch of random racers and this year we kind of feel like a team of friends,” said Mallory.

This year’s Power to Summit is once again virtual, with 54 teams trying to summit the elevation of Mt. Denali in Alaska. Along the way each team will be raising funds for Power to Be’s adaptive outdoor activity programs.

“There’s about 6,100 metres that we have to compete and we do that over three days,” said Dhillon. “There’s four of us so we probably cover about 1,100 to 1,500 metres each.”

The 2021 edition holds a special meaning to the members of Go Team Go. They’re dedicating their journey to Dhillon’s friend Kevin Peterson, a former Power to Be participant who passed away last year after battling medical complications.

“Power to Be was there for him and of course the family mentioned it when he passed away how much it meant to them,” said Dhillon. “So when it came to the opportunity to come back and do it [Power to Summit] again, we decided to do it in Kevin’s name.

Go Team Go hopes to raise $4,000 by the end of the event on Sunday, May 16.  To donate to the fundraiser visit the Power to Be website.
