For Victoria’s Jarrett Lindal photography and the great outdoors has always gone hand in hand.

“Pretty much since I was a kid I just loved being outdoors,” says Lindal.

“Grew up in kind of a rural area out in Courtenay and Comox and yeah picked up my first camera when I was just a kid,” adds Lindal.

Even with his early infatuation, it took a mountain bike crash a few years ago for Lindal to get serious about his camerawork.

“I was laid up for a while and I used the time of recovery to learn a new skill and really get into the details of photography and that got me into doing a lot more mountain biking shoots and getting involved in that way,” says Lindal.

From the mountain bike trails of B.C., Lindal progressed to nature and wildlife photography, a discipline that requires a lot of patience.

“A lot of the time we’re shooting on the coast,” says Lindal.

“We spend hours laying on the beach before sunrise with our cameras ready, half falling asleep,” adds Lindal.

His patience paid was rewarded on the North Island. Lindal and his friend, Finn Steiner, were camped out on a beach when a cougar came down to the water’s edge.

“It didn’t know we were there, we were laying down on the beach and we had a big rock behind us,” says Lindall. “The sun was just starting to come up and we were in the shade and then the photo I got was basically right as it noticed us,” says Lindal.

It was an amazing shot that landed Lindal a spot in an upcoming issue of Canadian Geographic.

“Someone in the graphic design department saw it from a photo competition and they put it up for a vote for the cover,” says Lindal.

“They ended up going for another one just suiting the cover better I guess, but mine will be in the magazine so I’m really excited about that,” smiles Lindal.
