CHEK Upside: Campbell River paramedic going for paddle boarding Guinness World Record

Watch Dallas Allison will attempt to beat the current stand up paddle boarding record of 193.8 kilometres over 24 hours Aug. 24th on Mohun Lake.

For Dallas Allison, paddle boarding provides the perfect pandemic relief.

“You know I hit the water in the morning and the breeze hits your face, it’s incredible,” says Allison.

Allison was an avid kayaker, but when a friend suggested that he try out paddle boarding he was immediately intrigued.

“I bought a paddle board and instantly sold all of my kayaking gear,”  says Allison. “It’s the rawness of it, it’s just you, a paddle and a board,”

Allison’s love of the sport quickly grew, with training taking up more and more of his time. Eventually, Allison decided to attempt a Guinness World Record for the longest stand up paddle board trip in 24 hours.

The record is currently held by Dutch paddle boarder Bart de Zwart at 193.8 kilometres, with Allison aiming to break the record by over 15 kilometres.

“In perfect conditions 210 kilometres is my goal and honestly I’m hoping looking at the conditions now to hit 200, but of course we’ll see,” says Allison.

The record attempt is also to raise funds for the Honour House Society, which offers free accommodation for Canadian Armed Forces members, veterans, first responders and their families needing medical treatment in Vancouver.

“These are people who have given up so much already and now they’re the ones that need a hand,” says Allison.

“What a place to be in to be able to help in that scenario,” adds Allison.

While the record attempt certainly won’t be easy, Allison is ready for the challenge.

“I’ve done everything I can up to this point … and I’m just going to work moment to moment,” says Allison.

Allison’s record attempt begins on Aug. 24 at 2 p.m. on Mohun Lake outside of Campbell River. To donate to the Honour House society, visit their website.
