Firefighters with CFB Esquimalt came to the rescue of a deer that became trapped between a fence post and building on Thursday.

Mario Bernier, a CFB Esquimalt firefighter, said a crew was going to the area where the fuel pumps are in Esquimalt at around 12:45 p.m.

“It was time to fuel up their vehicles and upon executing the left turn to get up here, I noticed the deer was stuck between the pole and the actual building,” Bernier said.

Bernier said the animal was struggling and appeared worn out once they got to it.

“We decided to put a blanket on him and we waited for wildlife recovery to come,” Bernier said.

“So we saved the deer but damaged the post.”

The deer was saved about an hour and a half later.

Jeff Krieger from Alternative Wildlife Solutions, who assisted in getting the trapped deer out and into a crate, said the deer will be taken to the BC SPCA Wild Animal Rehabilitation Centre (Wild ARC).
