A Cermaq employee has died after an incident at a fish farm off Vancouver Island’s west coast.

In a statement released Monday, Cermaq Canada confirmed there was a fatality at one of their sites.

“Out of respect for the family of the employee who has passed, the employees involved, and the official follow-up process, we will not be providing any further details at this time,” the company said in a statement.

“We are extending our heartfelt condolences and support to the family and friends of our employee. We are providing resources and support for our employees and families as they work through this tragic and difficult time.”

According to Cermaq, the Canadian Coast Guard was contacted about the incident and the company is continuing to work with officials.

“As the investigation progresses, we will share what we can, when it is appropriate,” Cermaq Canada said.

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed it is investigating the death of a man in his 20’s near Tofino.

WorkSafeBC said it was notified on Sunday evening about a serious boating incident in the Tofino area. WorkSafeBC sent prevention officers to the site on Monday and said it will be conducting an investigation.

“The primary purpose of our investigation is to identify the cause of the incident, including any contributing factors, so that similar incidents can be prevented from happening in the future,” , WorkSafeBC spokesman Craig Fitzsimmons said in a statement.
