A baseball diamond in Central Saanich has been renamed after a longtime volunteer.

Central Saanich‘s Centennial Park’s Ball Diamond #2 was officially renamed George Tiessen Diamond during a formal ceremony on April 9.

Tiessen, 84, has been volunteering with the Central Saanich Little League for more than 25 years. He first began volunteering after his son began playing in the 1970s and never stopped.

Over the years, Tiessen has done just about everything for the league as a volunteer, having been a coach, umpire, assistant chief umpire, and even re-designed the league’s logo which is still in use today, according to the Victoria News.

During the renaming Tiessen was presented with a plaque that will be installed on the diamond by Central Saanich mayor Ryan Windsor.

The diamond renamed after Tiessen is across from another diamond that was renamed in honour of longtime league volunteer and dear friend, Peter Parsons.
