If you’re looking to make an extra buck this long weekend and help a good cause, all you have to do is keep your eye out for cigarette butts.
A Vancouver Island man who founded Love Where You Live B.C. is determined to help clean up the streets.
He said he is ready to dish out cold hard cash for anyone willing to pick up discarded cigarette butts during an event this Saturday called Jam One in the Can.
Michael Wagner thinks people should get a deposit on cigarette filters so they can be recycled and repurposed. He said he is ready to part with a $1,000 to pay five cents for every butt picked up this Saturday. There will be a limit of $50 per person and all the butts will be sent for recycling.
“Why do smokers throw their butts on the ground? Great question. I don’t know why but I do know how to stop it and it only takes a nickle,” Wagner said.
Cigarette butts can be brought to the Party Crashers parking lot at 2642 Quadra St from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The group or person who collects the most cigarette butts will receive a prize of $500.
