CUSCO, Peru — Some Canadians trapped in countries that have closed their borders say they don’t know how they’re going to get home.

Nikita Singh and her boyfriend had returned from climbing Machu Picchu, when they learned the government of Peru had declared a state of emergency and shut down its borders.

Peru has also suspended rights to free movement and instructed people to stay in their homes.

Singh and her boyfriend were supposed to fly back to Toronto on Friday, but now she’s not sure when — or if — they’ll be able to leave.

She says they have not been able to contact anyone in Canada’s government or consulates for advice.

A group of about 11 University of Toronto medical students are also struggling to return from the South American country.

Peru had it’s first coronavirus case 10 days ago. Now there are 71.
