The construction site for the new Tlowitsis First Nations Village has been vandalized, including graffiti with a racist term, and Campbell River RCMP is investigating.

Police were called on June 15 for the vandalism and are asking for the public to help identify the people responsible.

The construction site is in the 200 block of Henry Road. Vandalism to the site included smashing the windows and glass of equipment like light stands, generators, and excavators.

Police say most of the graffiti was illegible, but the “n” word was clearly prominent.

“Damages at the construction site are substantial and will be approximately $25,000 to repair,” said Const. Maury Tyre, media relations officer for Campbell River RCMP.

“At this point, it’s too early in the investigation to determine whether the actions of the vandals were simply a senseless crime of opportunity or whether it was a targeted act.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Campbell River RCMP at 250-286-6221 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
