Campbell River RCMP is reminding pet owners to be mindful of the hotter temperatures when it comes to leaving animals in vehicles or tied up outside.
The force says that has responded to several complaints in recent weeks about pets in hot vehicles or tethered outside in public locales and needing water.
They say that allowing an animal to enter into distress can lead to cruelty charges.
“For all the responsible and loving pet owners in the community it’s important to remember, the heat in a vehicle or tied up outside by the hot blacktop can be deadly for your furry loved ones, so in the warm months it’s best to leave your pets at home.”
RCMP also advise the public against taking action against other people’s property or their animals.
“It is also important to remind the public to contact the authorities and avoid taking matters into their own hands,” said Campbell River RCMP spokesperson Cst. Maury Tyre.
They warn that people could put themselves in danger and escalate a situation. It can also result in charges if the person is deemed to have intervened in an inappropriate manner.
They remind the public that the BCSPCA has a contact number to report animals in distress (1-855-622-7722) and concerns can be directed to local RCMP as well.
