UPDATE: Fire officials say a brush fire in East Sooke is fully contained, although hot spots are still being fought.

A report of a brush fire came to East Sooke Volunteer Fire Department shortly after 3 p.m., with Sooke and Metchosin Fire crews also attending.

The Coastal Fire Centre says they sent four firefighters and a helicopter to assist in efforts.

Although dealing with windy conditions, officials said the fire was contained shortly after 5 p.m., and then fully contained in an update just after 7 p.m.

East Sooke fire officials say two homes were threatened and one had to be evacuated, but no structures were damaged.

“The brush fire was already extending up the hill towards several houses. Our guys jumped out, got the hoses up as quick as they could and managed to save all the structures,” East Sooke Fire Chief Roger Beck said.

“But as they were busy keeping the fire away from the houses, it managed to spread quite a bit more.”

The cause of the fire, with a burn area estimated to be three hectares, is unknown.
