The Capital Regional District has issued a boil water advisory for parts of Salt Spring Island following a water main break.

The water main break was on the Beddis water system, and areas serviced by this are under the advisory.

“As a precaution, the Boil Water Advisory will be in effect until flushing and water samples indicate the water quality no longer poses a risk to public health,” the CRD said in a notice on its website. “Residents in the impacted area should BOIL their drinking water until further notice.”

All tap water used for drinking, preparing food, beverages, ice cubes, washing fruits and vegetables, or brushing teeth should be boiled until the boil water advisory on Salt Spring Island is lifted.

To properly boil water to ensure it is safe, the CRD says to fill a pot with tap water and bring to a rolling boil for one minute, then the water can be cooled and poured into a clean container and can be refrigerated until ready to be used.

Dishwasher with a hot setting is still safe to use, but if it doesn’t have a hot setting then additional steps need to be taken. At the end of the cycle, soak the dishes for one minute in a solution of 1 oz. of bleach with three gallons of lukewarm water then let dishes air dry.

A map of the areas serviced by the Beddis water system can be seen below.
