The remains found near Tofino more than a week ago have now been identified as being those of Marcel Martin.

He is one of three Tla-o-qui-aht men missing since their fishing boat capsized and sank in mid-June.

Several sources in the community confirmed to CHEK News on Friday night that the remains were those of the husband and father of three.

The boat capsized near Duffin Cove off Tofino before dawn on June 15 with five people on board

Two men survived, but three others including Martin, Carl Micheal and Terrance Brown Jr. had been missing ever since.

The boat was located soon after.

The search continues for Michael and Brown Jr.

A sweater belonging to Micheal has also been found during ongoing searches this week.

Marcel Martin had been awarded a medal from the Lifesaving Society B.C. Yukon for his heroic rescue efforts following the sinking of Leviathan II whale watching boat near Tofino in October 2015.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to try to provide for the men’s families.

“We invite you to walk with us in providing for these families to create space in which the children’s needs can come first, both materially and emotionally,”  a note on the page reads.

The funds will be divided equally between the three families and go directly to the children and their mothers and/or their legal guardians.

You can find the page here

Donations can also be made directly to each family at the CIBC in Tofino through the family’s names.
