There was a large police presence near Nanaimo’s Downtown bus loop this morning after the discovery of a body Monday night.

A transit bus was behind police tape while a number of officers combed an area beside the bus loop.

Police say a transit supervisor discovered the skeletal remains around 7 o’clock Monday night and reported it.

Cst. Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP says they don’t suspect foul play but will continue to investigate until they can definitively rule it out. O’Brien was not able to confirm either a gender or approximate age of the deceased.

He says it appears the body may have been there for some time.

Several officers with the Vancouver Island Tactical Team conducted a grid search of the immediate area for any evidence relating to the discovery.

BC’s Coroner’s Service was also advised.
