A black bear has been spotted in Saanich.

According to Saanich Pound Inspectors, a black bear was spotted attempting to get into the garbage at a residential property in the 200-block of Goward Road at around 1:45 p.m. on May 5.

A resident was able to yell at the bear and chase it off their property and BC Conservation was notified according to the SPI.

They are reminding people that bear sightings will be more common now that winter is over.

“Bears are in the process of waking from their winter hibernation, so they will be out foraging for food and sightings of bears will be common. One way to help prevent encounters with bears is to properly secure your garbage, whether it be on your property or curbside waiting for collection,” the SPI said.

A locked garbage lid serves as a deterrent as well as securely storing your garbage inside a structure, the SPI noted.
