Saanich police are warning the public after a black bear was spotted on the Pat Bay Highway near Sayward Road Wednesday night.
The bear was seen just before 6 p.m. near the Baptist Church on the north side of the highway eating berries, according to police.
A runner came upon the black bear near Elk and Beaver Lake Wednesday.
Jordan Cheung said he stopped running and stayed still when he encountered the animal.
“The bear was not aggressive or anything I just saw it running near the trees,” Cheung told CHEK News.
The public is asked to keep its distance if they encounter the bear.
