It was a busy night for BC Hydro crews up and down Vancouver Island as thousands of customers were without power.

While power was restored overnight for many islanders, B.C. Hydro reports on its website that snow and wind continue to keep residents in the dark.

There are 20 power outages reported on the south island affecting 379 customers. Most have been caused by wind storms.

The largest hit area currently without power is from Interurban road west to Prospect Lake which has left 83 customers without power.

In Courtenay, 69 customers are without power and 55 more in Qualicum Beach with two separate outages.

All three were caused by trees across power lines.

Crews are also working on outages in Errington, Bowser, Hornby Island and south of Whiskey Creek.

Lost power for three of those is courtesy of trees falling on power lines.
