BC Ferries will be screening passengers due to COVID-19.

Passengers sailing with BC Ferries can expect to be screened prior to boarding.

In a brief statement released Monday afternoon, BC Ferries says it will be screening and asking questions to passengers travelling on routes that have a sailing time exceeding 30 minutes.

The announcement after the federal government unveiled new health guidelines that give ferry operators the ability to conduct health checks on passengers if the voyage is longer than 30 minutes and the power to boarding to anyone that displays symptoms of the coronavirus.

BC Ferries has made several major decisions in recent days, including cancelling all sailings on its Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay route and laying off roughly 1,400 employees.

There are more than 16,500 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Canada.
