BC Ferries says it is experiencing a high level of traffic as its website went down Monday, an outage that happened shortly after the province confirmed its non-essential travel ban between select health authorities would be lifted Tuesday.

In replies to Twitter users complaining that they weren’t able to book travel, BC Ferries said it was working to restore service to the website.

The company was also recommending those rushing to book travel after Monday’s announcement call its Customer Service Centre at 1-888-223-3779 as an alternative.

BC Ferries said it was investigating the root cause of the outage.

The outage comes after the Province confirmed it would move to Step 2 of its reopening plan as originally planned on Tuesday.

It means residents will once again be able to move freely about the province, including taking ferries to and from Vancouver Island, though the government is still encouraging out-of-province travellers to stay put.

The current restriction on non-essential travel expires at 11:59 p.m. on June 14, meaning passengers will no longer be asked if their travel is essential.

“The end of travel restrictions marks a key milestone in tackling COVID-19 and we are  thrilled it means we can welcome everyone back on board,” said Mark Collins, BC Ferries’  President & CEO.

“Our teams are ready to welcome back recreational travellers on all of our  routes. We will be adding sailings back into the schedule as we get into the summer season to  ensure we have the capacity to meet the anticipated demand.”

Masks will no longer be mandatory in outdoor spaces at BC Ferries terminals, though passengers will still be required to wear masks and physically distance while on board and not in their vehicles.
