BC Ferries has cancelled a series of sailings between Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay on Wednesday due to mechanical difficulties.

According to the ferry company, the Spirit of Vancouver Island — set to make the trip between the Island and the mainland multiple times today — will be taken out of service for maintenance.

BC Ferries says that the vessel is experiencing a problem with the starboard gearbox and, as a result, the following sailings will be cancelled on September 29:

7:00 am departing Swartz Bay
9:00 am departing Tsawwassen
11:00 am departing Swartz Bay
1:00 pm departing Tsawwassen
3:00 pm departing Swartz Bay
5:00 pm departing Tsawwassen
7:00 pm departing Swartz Bay
9:00 pm departing Tsawwassen

In an effort to compensate for the cancelled sailings, the organization says the Coastal Celebration will sail an additional round trip, departing Swartz Bay at 8:00 p.m. and Tsawwassen at 10:00 p.m.

“We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience as a result of these cancellations. We are working to resolve the issue, and we will keep you informed as soon as more information becomes available,” reads a statement from BC Ferries in a service advisory.

Customers with bookings will have their bookings cancelled and reservation fees refunded and BC Ferries says travel will revert to standby basis.
