BC Ferries cancels all sailings on major routes, starting at 3 pm, due to windstorm

BC Ferries vessels on major routes were cancelled from 3 p.m. onwards due to high winds.

BC Ferries says it will be cancelling all the sailings on the major routes starting at 3 p.m. due to the windstorm.

This includes:

  • Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay
  • Tsawwassen – Duke Point
  • Horseshoe Bay – Departure Bay
  • Horseshoe Bay – Langdale
  • Tsawwassen – Southern Gulf Islands
  • Swartz Bay – Sturdies Bay
  • Horseshoe Bay – Bowen Island
  • Langdale – Gambier & Keats Islands

And due to the forecasted weather conditions and sailing cancellations, the Tsawwassen Quay will be closed at 3 p.m. Food service will not be available.

Powell River to Comox sailings are also cancelled, starting with the 7:10 p.m. sailing leaving Little River.

There were also cancellations earlier Wednesday. The Horseshoe Bay to Snug Cove (Bowen Island) route has already seen cancellations starting on the 11:25 a.m. leaving Horseshoe Bay. Sailings on that route are cancelled for the remainder of the day.

All sailings in and out of Sturdies Bay (Southern Gulf Islands) from Swartz Bay were cancelled at 10:20 a.m. for the remainder of the day due to adverse weather conditions.

BC Ferries said it is expecting hurricane-force southeast winds of 70 to 90 km/h developing over Greater Victoria this evening before spreading to the Southern Gulf Islands, East Vancouver Island – Duncan to Nanaimo, southern and western sections of Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast.

Ferry passengers are advised to check back tomorrow morning to see which sailings are running.

On Vancouver Island, east Vancouver Island from Duncan to Nanaimo, Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands are under a wind warning. 

According to Environment Canada, a deep low-pressure system will cross Vancouver Island Wednesday night.

Ahead of the low, southeast winds of 70 to 90 km/h will develop in Greater Victoria early in the evening and spread to the Southern Gulf Islands, East Vancouver Island – Duncan to Nanaimo, southern and western sections of Metro Vancouver and the Sunshine Coast later in the evening.

There are also snowfall warnings and winter storm warnings on parts of Vancouver Island and the Southern Gulf Islands.
