With a busy long weekend approaching, BC Ferries says one of its larger vessels and more sailings will be added on major routes between Vancouver Island and the lower mainland.

There will be 70 extra sailings between Swartz Bay in North Saanich and Tsawwassen on the Easter long weekend from April 18 to 23, with the Spirit of Vancouver Island returning to service.

BC Ferries says the vessel went through ‘mid-life upgrades’, including a conversion from diesel to liquefied natural gas, improved navigation equipment and on-board amenities.

Another 11 sailings will be added between Nanaimo’s Departure Bay and Horseshoe Bay, and there will be eight extra sailings for the Vancouver-Sunshine Coast route.

BC Ferries says regular sailing times have been changed for the Departure Bay-Horseshoe Bay route on the long weekend, and say travellers using that service to check sailing schedules online.

The corporation advises the most popular times for departures are on Thursday night and Friday morning, and the following Monday afternoon.

Among their long weekend travel tips, BC Ferries says customers should reserve a spot and arrive early and consider parking options as lots at major terminals can fill up quickly over the long weekend.
