2 new COVID cases reported on Vancouver Island, active cases down 70% since early May

With more and more people vaccinated on Vancouver Island May 5, the number of active cases has fallen 70 per cent since then.

B.C. health officials have reported 194 new COVID-19 cases and four deaths since their last update on June 1.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. now stands at 144,667 while the death toll climbs to 1,707.

Of the new cases, 33 were in Vancouver Coastal Health, 122 were in Fraser Health, two were in Island Health, 33 were in Interior Health, and four were in Northern Health.

There are currently 2,662 active cases in the province, 246 people in hospital — 70 of whom are in intensive care.

A total of 140,238 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 and more than 3.36 million doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide. Roughly 71 per cent of all adults have received at least one dose of vaccine now.

Today’s data was released as a statement to the media, in which health officials expressed optimism regarding the province’s restart plan.

“With BC’s Restart plan progressing, this is a time of transition for all of us. We are slowly and cautiously moving forward through Step 1, and in the weeks ahead, activities that have been on hold will resume once again,” Dr. Bonnie Henry, the provincial health officer, and Health Minister Adrian Dix said in a joint statement.

Island Health

Coronavirus numbers on Vancouver Island have been trending generally in the right direction for weeks now, with the trend continuing today.

Since May 5, the amount of vaccine doses administered on Vancouver Island has increased 74 per cent while active cases on Vancouver Island have fallen 73 per cent during the same period, with all three regions seeing decreases of 70 per cent or higher.

Currently, there are 52 active cases a decrease of seven cases since June 1 — and six people in hospital, one of whom is in critical care, on Vancouver Island. 

Of the active cases on Vancouver Island, five are in the North Island, 21 are in Central Island, and 26 are in the South Island.

The number of people in hospital has dropped by one while the number of people in critical care has decreased by two in the past 24 hours.

Also in the past 24 hours, there were 9,443 doses of vaccine administered — 1 dose of AstraZeneca, 1,979 doses of Moderna, and 7,463 doses of Pfizer — and 639 new tests for COVID-19 performed on Vancouver Island. 

Meanwhile, when it comes to doses administered on the Island, 95 per cent have been first doses while just five per cent have been second doses.

Editor’s note: BCCDC’s dashboard shows 87 active cases, however in a statement to CHEK News, Island Health says that their active case count (52) is reflective of the most recent available data.
