British Columbia health officials reported 78 new cases of COVID-19 for the entire province on Wednesday, with two linked to the Island Health region.

British Columbia health officials reported 78 new cases of COVID-19 for the entire province on Wednesday, with two linked to the Island Health region.

Within the Island Health region, there is currently a total of 14 active COVID-19 cases.

In a statement released to the media, Dr. Bonnie Henry says that 48 are in hospital with 16 people in critical care as a result of the virus. There are currently 729 active cases in British Columbia.

Since Tuesday’s numbers, there have been 23 new cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Coastal Health region, 21 in the Fraser Health region, two in the Island Health region, 31 in the Interior Health region, one in the Northern Health region and no case of a person who resides outside of Canada.

There were no additional deaths related to the virus on Wednesday. This keeps the provincial death total over the course of the pandemic to 1,763.

Also as of Wednesday, the total number of cases in British Columbia over the course of the pandemic has reached 148,641.

As for the Province’s vaccination program, B.C. has now administered a total of 6,297,149 doses of COVID-19 immunizations.

Health officials say that equates to first doses for 81.1 per cent of all eligible adult British Columbians and 80.1 per cent of all eligible people 12 and older.

In addition, 59 per cent of all eligible adults have received their second dose, totalling 2,552,325 residents.

Island Health

Currently, on Vancouver Island, there are 14 active cases — two in North Island, two in Central Island and 10 in South Island.

One person is in hospital due to the coronavirus and no one is in critical care.

Since the last update on July 20, there were 681 new COVID-19 tests performed and 10,387 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island. Of the doses administered, 13 were AstraZeneca, 2,877 were Moderna and 7,497 doses were Pfizer.

A total of 1,035,525 doses of vaccine have been administered on Vancouver Island — 32,478 doses of AstraZeneca, 256,455 doses of Moderna and 743,592 doses of Pfizer — of which 414,212 (40 per cent) are second doses.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 5,200 cases reported, 41 deaths, and 256 total hospitalizations, 5,141 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.
