B.C. reports 6,966 new COVID-19 cases over the weekend, more than 1,200 new cases in Island Health

British Columbia health officials have reported 6,966 new COVID-19 cases — including 1,249 cases in Island Health  — and seven deaths over a three-day period.

None of the new deaths were in Island Health.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now 283,841 at while the death toll climbs to 2,446.

Daily case breakdown:

Jan. 7-8: 2,573 new cases
Jan. 8-9: 2,287 new cases
Jan. 9-10: 2,106 new cases

There are currently 34,551 active cases across the province — including 3,821 in the Island Health region — and 431 people in hospital, 95 of whom are in intensive care.

New data from provincial health officers shows that between Dec. 31 and Jan. 6, fully vaccinated individuals accounted for 82.2 per cent of all new cases identified while unvaccinated individuals accounted for 15.1 per cent of new cases.

Furthermore, between Dec. 24 and Jan. 6, fully vaccinated individuals accounted for 61.1 per cent of all hospitalizations in B.C. while unvaccinated individuals accounted for 35.6 per cent of hospitalizations during this time period.

Health officials also announced that an outbreak at Victoria General Hospital has now been declared over.

A total of  243,953 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 9,728,199 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.
