B.C. reports 536 new COVID cases and one death, 26 cases in Island Health

British Columbia health officials on Wednesday reported 536 new COVID-19 cases and one new death since their last update on Aug. 10.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 153,849 while the death toll climbs to 1,778.

Of the new cases, 105 were recorded in Vancouver Coastal Health, 135 were in Fraser Health, 26 were in Island Health, 258 were in Interior Health, and 12 were in Northern Health.

There are currently 3,585 active cases — including 222 active cases in Island Health — and 72 people in hospital, 29 of whom are in intensive care, in British Columbia.

A total of 148,446 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 7,114,250 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

Today’s data was released as a statement to the media.

Island Health

There are 185 identified active cases — 12 in North Island, 73 in Central Island and 100 in South Island — on Vancouver Island, according to the latest information update from Island Health.

It’s worth noting that Island Health’s active case count continues to differ greatly from the figure released by the provincial government.

There are currently two people in hospital, both of whom are in critical care, according to the latest data provided by the BCCDC.

Over the past 24 hours, there were 1,013 COVID-19 tests performed and 4,918 doses of vaccine administered — nine doses of AstraZeneca, 1,712 doses of Moderna and 3,197 doses of Pfizer — on Vancouver Island.

A total of 1,183,809 doses of vaccine — 46.5 per cent of those are second doses — have been administered on Vancouver Island. That includes 32,676 doses of AstraZeneca, 288,675 doses of Moderna and 862,458 doses of Pfizer.

Since the pandemic began, there have been 5,510 cases reported, 41 deaths, and 258 total hospitalizations, and 5,244 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.
