76 new COVID-19 cases and 1 death reported in Island Health

British Columbia health officials have reported 752 new COVID-19 cases and nine since their last update on Oct. 5.

One death was recorded in Island Health, bringing the region’s death toll to 71.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. climbs to 191,124 while the death toll climbs is now at 1,992.

Of the new cases identified, 76 were Island Health, 85 were Vancouver Coastal Health, 297 were in Fraser Health, 164 were in Interior Health, and 130 were in Northern Health.

There are currently 5,945 active cases in the province and 350 people in hospital — 136 of whom are in intensive care. The province also says there are 743 active cases in the Island Health region.

A total of 182,786 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 7,908,832 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

Today’s data was released as a statement to the media.

Island Health

With the announcement of one death in Island Health, the region has now recorded 23 deaths since Sept. 1.

According to the latest update from Island Health, there are 659 active cases — 53 in North Island, 264 in Central Island and 342 in South Island — currently on Vancouver Island.

Thirty-nine people in the region are currently in hospital with COVID-19, 22 of whom are in critical care.

Over the past 24 hours, there were 1,582 new tests for COVID-19 performed and 2,047 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island, according to the BCCDC’s dashboard. Of those doses, 62 were AstraZeneca, 1,112 were Moderna and 873 doses were Pfizer.

A total of 1,314,893 vaccine doses — 634,533 are second doses and 1,098 are listed as “other” doses — have been administered on Vancouver Island. This includes 34,030 doses of AstraZeneca, 359,925 doses of Moderna and 920,938 doses of Pfizer.

Since the onset of the pandemic, there have been 9,115 cases reported, 71 deaths, 425 total hospitalizations, and 8,246 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.

Editor’s note: The BCCDC lists the active case count for Vancouver Island at 743, which is 84 more active cases than what Island Health has reported. There are often discrepancies between the figures due to “differences in reporting” timeframes between the two agencies.
