Record-setting 107 new COVID-19 cases reported on Vancouver Island

British Columbia health officials have reported 593 new COVID-19 cases, including 107 cases linked to Vancouver Island, since their last update on Oct. 4.

The announcement of 107 new cases in Island Health is a new single-day record for reported new cases in the health authority. The previously reported high of 102 cases was set last month.

There were no new deaths reported over the past 24 hours, according to the provincial government.

The number of confirmed cases in B.C. is now at 190,372 while the death toll remains at 1,983.

There are currently active cases in the province and 345 people in hospital — 144 of whom are in intensive care. The province also says there are 723 active cases on Vancouver Island.

In addition to the 107 new cases in Island Health, there were 203 new cases recorded in Fraser Health, 128 in Interior Health, 68 in Vancouver Coastal Health, and 87 in Northern Health.

A total of 182,04 people in B.C. have recovered from COVID-19 while 7,894,975 doses of vaccine have been administered province-wide.

New data from the province shows that between Sept. 27 and Oct. 3, people not fully vaccinated accounted for 70.7 per cent of cases and from Sept. 20 to Oct. 3, they accounted for 78.1 per cent of hospitalizations.

Today’s data was released as a statement to the media.

Island Health

With the announcement of a record-setting 107 new COVID-19 cases in a single 24 hour period, the Island Health region surpassed the 9,000 mark for total confirmed cases on Tuesday.

According to the latest update from Island Health, there are 621 active cases — 52 in North Island, 242 in Central Island and 327 in South Island — currently on Vancouver Island.

Forty people in the region are currently in hospital with COVID-19, 23 of whom are in critical care.

Over the past 24 hours, there were 1,722 new tests for COVID-19 performed, 1,047 doses of vaccine administered on Vancouver Island, according to the BCCDC’s dashboard. Of those doses, 52 were AstraZeneca, 535 were Moderna and 460 doses were Pfizer.

A total of 1,312,846 vaccine doses — 632,296 are second doses and 1,069 are listed as “other” doses — have been administered on Vancouver Island. This includes 33,968 doses of AstraZeneca, 358,813 doses of Moderna and 920,065 doses of Pfizer.

Since the onset of the pandemic, there have been 9,039 cases reported, 70 deaths, 420 total hospitalizations, and 8,189 recoveries recorded on Vancouver Island.

Editor’s note: The BCCDC lists the active case count for Vancouver Island at 723, which is 102 more active cases than what Island Health has reported. There are often discrepancies between the figures due to “differences in reporting” timeframes between the two agencies.
